Metal Soffit & Fascia

The Roof Edge Matters

Soffit & Fascia,
Explained Simply

Soffit is the underside of your roof overhang; fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge where your gutters mount. Together they protect your rafter tails, keep weather and animals out of the attic, and let the attic breathe. We repair and replace both, and for most mountain homes we recommend metal: it doesn't rot, doesn't need paint, and pairs with ember-resistant vents.

The roof edge takes a beating at elevation. Snow and ice sit in the gutters for months, meltwater wicks into the fascia boards behind them, and high-altitude sun cooks the paint off anything wood. Once the fascia softens, gutters start pulling loose, and birds, bats, squirrels, and insects find their way in through the gaps.

Soffits have a second job that most people don't think about: they're the intake for your attic ventilation. Blocked or missing soffit vents are a common reason for ice dams, and open or coarse-screened vents are a known path for wildfire embers. Getting the soffit right protects the roof above it and the home inside it.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Soffit &
Fascia Need Work

If you're seeing any of these, it's worth a free look before the next winter.

Peeling Paint & Soft Wood

Bubbling paint, soft spots, or crumbling edges along the fascia board, especially behind gutters.

Sagging or Loose Gutters

Gutters pulling away from the house usually means the fascia they're screwed into is failing.

Stains Under the Eaves

Water stains or dark streaks on the soffit point to ice dams or leaks at the roof edge.

Animals in the Attic

Nesting birds, bats, squirrels, or insects getting in through gaps, holes, or loose soffit panels.

Heavy Icicles & Ice Dams

Often a sign of blocked soffit vents and poor attic ventilation, not just a cold winter.

Missing or Damaged Vents

Cracked, missing, or coarse-screened vents that let in pests, weather, and embers.

Material Choice

Why Metal Soffit &
Fascia Makes Sense

We repair wood soffit and fascia too, but for most homes in our area metal is the better long-term answer. It also matches beautifully with metal siding.

Metal (Aluminum or Steel)

  • Won't rot, even behind gutters full of ice and snowmelt.
  • No painting; factory finishes hold up to high-altitude sun.
  • Noncombustible, and pairs with ember-resistant vented panels.
  • Woodpeckers and critters can't chew or drill through it.
  • Vented or solid panels to balance attic airflow.

Wood

  • Rots where water and ice sit, usually behind the gutter.
  • Needs repainting every few years at elevation.
  • Combustible, a weak point in wildfire-prone areas.
  • A target for woodpeckers, squirrels, and insects.
  • Fits historic or log homes where an original look matters.

Common Questions

Soffit & Fascia FAQ

What's the difference between soffit and fascia?

Soffit is the underside of your roof overhang, the flat surface you see when you look up from below the eaves. Fascia is the vertical board that runs along the edge of the roof, where your gutters attach. Soffit often includes vents that let air into the attic; fascia protects the ends of the rafters and supports the gutters.

How do I know if my fascia is rotted?

Common signs are peeling or bubbling paint along the roof edge, soft or crumbling wood, gutters that sag or pull away, dark water staining, and gaps where the fascia meets the roof. Rot usually starts behind the gutter, where snowmelt and ice sit longest, so it's often worse than it looks from the ground.

Is metal soffit and fascia worth it?

For most mountain homes, yes. Aluminum or steel soffit and fascia won't rot, never needs painting, doesn't attract woodpeckers, and is noncombustible. It costs more than simply repainting wood, but it ends the repaint-and-repair cycle that wood fascia goes through at elevation.

Do soffit vents help prevent ice dams?

They're a big part of it. Soffit vents pull cold outside air into the attic, and roof vents let warm air out. When soffit vents are blocked or missing, the attic warms up, snow melts on the upper roof and refreezes at the cold eaves, and ice dams form. We check ventilation any time we work on soffits. Learn more about roof repair for ice dam damage.

Can wildfire embers get in through soffit vents?

Yes. Embers can be carried long distances ahead of a wildfire and get pulled into attics through open or coarse-screened vents, which is one of the ways homes ignite. Ember-resistant vents with fine metal mesh (1/8 inch or smaller is the commonly recommended size) and noncombustible metal soffits reduce that risk.

Should I replace soffit and fascia at the same time as my roof or siding?

It's usually the best time to do it. The gutters are already coming off for a roof, and the trim is already exposed for siding, so combining the work saves labor and lets everything be flashed together correctly. Ask about it on your roofing or siding estimate.

Do you cover old fascia with metal or replace it?

If the fascia board underneath is solid and dry, it can be wrapped with formed metal. If it's soft, cracked, or rotted, we replace the wood first. We don't cover up rot, because it keeps spreading under the metal and takes the gutters with it.
