Vinyl siding installation, replacement, and repair, with an honest take on where vinyl works at elevation and where something tougher is worth it.
Vinyl at Elevation
Where Vinyl Works,
and Where It Doesn't
We install and repair vinyl because it's the right answer for some projects, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you something you don't need. A detached garage in a sheltered spot, a rental on a budget, or matching existing vinyl on an addition can all be good fits.
Where we'll steer you away is exposed walls on open lots and anywhere wildfire is a real concern. Vinyl gets brittle in the cold, fades under high-altitude UV, and warps from heat, including sunlight reflected off nearby windows. If vinyl is the choice, we'll recommend a thicker panel and install it the way it's meant to go up: hung loosely so it can expand and contract, not nailed tight.
The Honest Breakdown
Vinyl Siding
Pros & Cons
Where Vinyl Makes Sense
- Lowest upfront cost of any siding type.
- Low maintenance: no painting, just occasional washing.
- Easy panel replacement when a piece gets damaged.
- Good fit for sheltered walls, garages, sheds, and budget-driven projects.
What to Know First
- Shorter life at elevation, typically 15 to 20 years here.
- Brittle in cold, so hail and winter impacts crack it more easily.
- No fire resistance; it melts and deforms under heat.
- Fades in high-altitude sun, which makes later repairs harder to match.

How It Compares
Vinyl vs.
Other Siding
| Material | Typical Lifespan Here | Fire Resistance | Hail Performance | Upkeep | Best Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metal (steel / aluminum) | 40–70 years | Noncombustible | Strongest overall; heavier gauge resists denting best | Low | Wildfire zones, hail-exposed walls, low-maintenance homes |
| Fiber cement | 25–40 years | Noncombustible | Good; very large hail can crack or chip boards | Moderate: periodic repainting | Traditional painted-wood look with fire resistance |
| Vinyl | 15–20 years | Combustible; melts and deforms | Weakest; brittle in cold snaps | Low, but cracked panels need replacing | Tight budgets, sheltered walls, outbuildings |

Common Questions
Vinyl Siding FAQ
Is vinyl siding a good choice in Colorado's mountains?
It can be, in the right spot. Vinyl is the lowest-cost siding to install and needs little maintenance, so it can make sense on sheltered walls, garages, outbuildings, or tight budgets. On exposed walls at high elevation, it's more likely to crack in cold snaps and hail, fade in the sun, and it offers no fire resistance.
How long does vinyl siding last in Colorado?
At mountain elevations, plan on about 15 to 20 years. You'll see longer numbers quoted nationally, but high-altitude UV, big temperature swings, and hail shorten vinyl's life up here. Thicker, better-grade panels last longer than builder-grade vinyl.
Does vinyl siding crack in cold weather?
Vinyl gets more brittle as temperatures drop, so impacts that wouldn't hurt it in summer, like hail, a snow shovel, or a thrown rock, can crack it in winter. Thicker panels and correct installation help.
Can you repair just one cracked vinyl panel?
Usually, yes. A damaged vinyl panel can often be unlocked and replaced without disturbing the rest of the wall. The harder part is matching color on sun-faded siding, which we'll talk through before we start.
Is vinyl siding fire resistant?
No. Vinyl is combustible and melts and deforms under radiant heat, even from a nearby grill or a fire several feet away. For homes with real wildfire exposure, we recommend metal or fiber cement.
Vinyl vs. metal siding: which costs less?
Vinyl costs less to install. Metal costs more upfront but can last 40 to 70 years versus about 15 to 20 for vinyl at our elevation, so over the life of the home metal is often the lower-cost choice.
